As any project, that does not generate income, we have to rely on donations from the community to be able to expand and promote the project. As a young project without any financial reserves we need funds now. So we have decided in our last core-meeting to start a donation-sprint to raise the money we need.

This information was collected over the past (2010-2011) year from multiple sources, plus my experimentation on 4 different SSD models. Performance testing procedures are by devil, from his article on the German blog. I have sequentially numbered some of the paragraphs for ease of reference when discussing and/or correcting the information – corrections and improvements are welcome.

We are excited to present to you, after last week's release candidate, the first final release of siduction, a new distribution based on our great mother Debian's Unstable branch and forked from aptosid. As the logo suggests, this is a community approach. Filled with life, that means for the community as well as with and from the community. We would like to thank all the testers that enabled us to fix the bugs that were left in the release candidate.

When we set out in July of 2011 to fork aptosid, we were not quite aware, how much work lay ahead of us. The first part of the way was setting up a new infrastructure, before we could actually start working on the packages. Most of us had to learn many new things to pull this through, and here we are.

From Knoppix to sidux

Anyone who has been lingering around in the orbit of Sid-based Distros for some time, will know the history from Knoppix over KANOTIX to sidux and aptosid.

There isn't much to say against aptosid (on the technical side of things), it's solid, released on a regular basis, maintained responsibly. In two words: it works. What hindered aptosid from having the success that sidux promised it would have is firstly the discourse with users, which implies that a community is not really wanted and rather cumbersome. Evolving from this latent feeling was a group of users deemed as renitent, which have been consequently expelled due to their criticism. Finally I as well had to realize, that despite it's technical brillance, which up to that point still kept me in their ranks, there was no future there for me.

Von Knoppix zu sidux

Wer sich schon länger im Dunstkreis von Distributionen bewegt, die auf Debian Unstable setzen, wird den bisherigen Verlauf von Knoppix über Kanotix nach sidux und aptosid kennen.

Gegen aptosid gibt es technisch wenig zu sagen. Es ist solide, wird regelmäßig released, verantwortungsvoll maintained. Mit zwei Worten: es funktioniert. Was aptosid den Erfolg verwehrt, den sidux versprach, haben zu können, ist eher der Umgang mit den Usern, der das Gefühl aufkommen lässt, eine Community sei eigentlich nicht gewollt und eher lästig. Aus diesem latenten Gefühl formte sich mit der Zeit eine Gruppe als renitent angesehener User, die dann auch generalstabsmäßig vertrieben wurden, weil sie Kritik übten. Ich konnte am Ende nicht mehr darumhin, einzusehen, dass bei aller technischen Brillianz, die mich immer noch in deren Lager hielt, dort keine Zukunft liegt.

Hallo zusammen,

ich habe mir heute mal die Mühe gemacht die monatlichen Mitgliederzahlen seit Bestehen des Forums zu ermitteln und in einer Grafik darzustellen. Das deutsche aptosid Forum besteht seit 27. Agust 2010 und hat (Stand heute: 02.02.2011) 353 aktive Mitglieder.

systemd ist ein ein init System welches in Konkurenz zum bewährten Sysvinit  und zu Upstart steht. Entwickelt wurde es von dem bekannten RedHat Entwickler Lennart Poettering.
